Almost 19 years after the release of Peter Jackson’s final installment, Amazon will release The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power on Prime Video. The series will focus on the events before the destruction of the ring, serving as a prequel for J.R.R Tolkien’s trilogy. While the books take place in the Third Age, the series will focus on Middle Earth’s Second Age. Some of what we know about the series has been revealed below.
The Plot
Prime Video has offered asynopsis for the Rings of Power, providing viewers an idea of what the show will focus on. It will focus on bringing the legends of the Second Age to the screen. The show is set centuries before the events of The Lord of the Rings and Tolkien’s The Hobbit. It will give viewers a glimpse of unlikely heroes, the rise and fall of kingdoms, and a look into the fantastical world Tolkien brought to life in the pages of his books. The ensemble cast’s story will begin in a time of peace but are forced to address the growing evil in Middle Earth. The story will not just focus on humans and hobbits, but we will get to explore the Misty Mountains, the dwarven stronghold of Khazad-dûm,the elven forest-capital Lindon, and Aragorn’s ancestors in Numenor. The viewers will also get the chance to see how the twenty rings of power were forged. On 19th January, Amazon released the first teaser where a woman recites the epigraph to the Lord of the Rings.
An article published in Vanity Fair gave us further insight into the plot of the show. The show wouldn’t be based on any of Tolkien’s novels but has used the backstory detailed in the appendices. - Prince Durin is the prince of Khazad-dum.
- Arondir, a Silvan elf, will be involved in an illicit love affair with Bronwyn.
- Bronwyn is a human healer, who lives with her mother in Middle Earth.
Behind the Scenes
The show began production in 2020, and we are expected to receive more than one season. Amazon won the bid to produce the show for $250 million, back in 2017. When the deal was signed, the show was expected to run for five seasons. As of the time of this article, Amazon has confirmed only a second season.
